Checking In /Checking Out

Check-in time: 3pm
Check-out time: 11am

Our ability to accommodate requests for early check-in or late check-out is based on hotel occupancy and our staffing levels during that particular day. We try to be as accommodating as possible; however, there are some days when flexibility to our normal times simply cannot be achieved. Please notify the front desk of your request as soon as possible during your stay.

Abigail's Hotel Rates and Booking Policies

Rates are based on double occupancy, a $30 charge applies for each additional guest thereafter
We do not accept reservations from individuals under the age of 21
All room rates are quoted in Canadian funds and are subject to municipal, provincial and federal taxes. Quoted tax rates are subject to change and if any US rates are quoted, they are approximate due to fluctuations in the exchange rate

A credit card (Visa, Mastercard or American Express) is required to confirm all bookings
Upon booking the first night's stay (plus tax) is charged to confirm the reservation

Children

All bookings require children to be a minimum age of 13 in order to stay with us. Accordingly, teenagers ages 13 and older are considered adults for purposes of occupancy when staying in a room with their parents.

Pets

No pets of any kind are permitted to stay at Abigail's.

Cancellation / Modification Policy

Abigail's has a 14-day cancellation policy
Abigail's guests will be given a refund for any cancellations made 14 days prior to arrival, however a $30+tax service charge will apply
All reservations are final within 14 days of arrival and any changes or cancellations therein will result in a charge of one night's room and tax.

Our cancellation policy exists to protect our customers as well as the hotel. Unlike industry practice, Abigail's does not believe in 'overselling' its rooms whereby certain other properties factor in a cancellation contingency and continue to sell more rooms than they actually have. Sometimes this practice works for them, other times guests arrive from distant locations only to find they must be escorted to another property - which, as you can imagine, is disastrous. To hedge our exposure from not overselling rooms, we must give ourselves a cancellation notification period that allows for a reasonable 'booking window' to re-sell a cancelled room.

Non-Smoking

Abigail's is 100% non-smoking, both inside and outside of our property. This is the result of a city wide by-law, effective January 2014, that prohibits smoking within seven meters of all doorways, windows or air intakes. Anyone found smoking in their rooms or in our common spaces will be subject to a $200 penalty charge and may be liable for additional fee's in the event their rooms go out of service for treatment and cannot be resold.

What is the history of the hotel?

Does Abigail's have an elevator?
No. Unfortunately Abigail's is a heritage property with space constraints that do not currently permit us to have an elevator. Accordingly, guests with mobility restrictions are encouraged to stay in our Ruby Queen Room, located on the lobby level of the main house. All of our other guest rooms are located up at least one flight of stairs.

Does Abigail's offer baggage assistance?
We almost always have housemen to assist you with your baggage upon check-in and check-out between the hours of 9:30am to 5:00pm. However, this is seasonally available and outside of that timeframe our service becomes more limited due to the size constraints of our operation and we cannot guarantee assistance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

How many "storeys" or "floors" is it to our room?
Abigail's Main House has 4 storeys (3 floors) and Abigail's Coach House has 3 storeys (2 floors). Abigail's uses a British or European floor numbering convention whereby the first floor is located one storey above ground level, so our third floor is located four storeys up from our lobby. This does seem to differ from American flooring convention (i.e. ground level is called the first floor). The floors that each of our rooms are located on is described in detail under the "More Info" buttons our "Rooms" page.

Does Abigail’s Hotel have a Loyalty Reward Program?
Abigail’s offers one Loyalty Reward Program which is facilitated through our Unique Inns association. Upon your check-out with us simply ask about receiving a reward code for Unique Inns. Each stay code is valued at $20. Once you accumulate $100 you will receive a gift certificate redeemable at any member of Unique Inns. What are the sizes of your guest rooms?
Square footage for our guest rooms are approximate (believe it or not, almost all of our rooms are slightly different), as follows:

Amethyst Rooms: 200 sq. ft.
Ruby Rooms: 300 sq. ft.
Opal Rooms: 300 sq. ft.
Rose Rooms: 300 sq. ft.
Emerald Rooms: 300 sq. ft.
Sapphire Rooms: 380 sq. ft.

Do your rooms have any views?
No, Abigail's is an urban property with little to no views. We are located in a part of the city where the residential portion meets the urban portion. As a result, we are nicely located in a quieter neighbourhood that is still in close proximity to the Inner Harbour and central parts of downtown Victoria. Our rooms have views of the surrounding neighbourhood buildings, our parking lot and a couple that face our quaint gardens. All of our room windows are covered in gorgeous custom made Austrian Shades that allow for plenty of light to shine through. We do not guarantee room locations or specific views.

Do you have smoking rooms/floors?

Do you have guest rooms with double beds?
Our Ruby Double Room has two double beds in it and our Ruby Queen Room has a Queen bed and a Queen sized sofa-bed in it. The remainder of our rooms are either King or Queen sized beds. Our Opal room category and our Regal room category are sufficient in size to accommodate a rollaway cot.

Do your guestrooms have a table and desk suitable for meetings with clients?
Our guestrooms were designed for luxury and comfort with a focus on fulfilling your recreational needs. Most rooms have a small desk for your personal use, but for formal/true workspace we would recommend making alternative arrangements. Our staff can arrange external meeting space at several nearby facilities.

Does Abigail's have a restaurant?
No, Abigail's food service extends only to breakfast (three-course breakfast served daily with seasonal start times ranging from 7:30am to 10am) and light evening appetizers. There are many award winning and fantastic restaurants within short walking distance of the hotel which we would be happy to recommend.

Is Abigail's haunted?
Sadly, no. We appreciate this limits our ability to market ourselves to various niche markets throughout North America but we simply can't claim that we've seen any ghosts or had anything unusual happen on our property that warrants the notion. (On second thought, the answer to this question seems to depend on which staff member you ask!)

Do we have cooking facilities in our guest rooms?
No. We've never aspired to cook while on vacation, nor would we expect our guests to.

What time is check-in?
Our standard check-in time is 3pm.

What time is check-out?
Our standard check-out time is 11am.

Can I request a late check-out?
Late check-out is based upon availability and is not something that we can guarantee. We will make every effort to accommodate this request, however during busy season this is extremely difficult on our housekeeping team as it narrows the window of time that we have to "turn around" a room for the next arrival.

Can I store my luggage for the day once I've checked out of the hotel?
Absolutely! We provide complimentary luggage storage from the time you check-out.

What are the complimentary guest amenities offered by the hotel?
Our complimentary amenities include, wireless high-speed Internet access, iPods Sound Docks in all of our rooms, access to our DVD collection in our library, free local phone calls, 2 bottles of water and freshly baked cookies in your room upon check-in and parking at our rear parking lot.

Do you have wireless high speed Internet access?
Yes, Abigail's offers complimentary high speed wireless internet access in all of our public areas and guest rooms. In fact, we have a dedicated 15 MBPS wireless modem in each and every one of our rooms which guarantees a high speed connection and plenty of signal strength.

Do you have a fitness center or swimming pool?
Unfortunately, we do not have a fitness center or pool; however, we are conveniently located just a block and a half away from a YMCA facility that has drop-in rates and access to workout equipment and a pool.

How far is Abigail's from major Victoria attractions?
Abigail's is extremely well located and in close proximity to most of the major Victoria attractions and neighbourhoods. Below are estimated travel distance and time for some of Victoria's most popular destinations:

Victoria's Inner Harbour – approximately 3 blocks away – 10 minute walk
Royal British Columbia Museum – approximately 3.5 blocks away - 12 minute walk
Parliament Buildings – approximately 4.5 blocks away - 15 minute walk
Craigdarroch Castle – approximately 1.6 km's away - 20 minute walk or 5 minutes by car
Government House – approximately 1.6 km's away - 20 minute walk or 5 minutes by car

Is it customary to tip/provide gratuities in Canada?
Gratuities are completely up to your own personal discretion, they are appreciated but certainly not required. It is often customary to tip approximately 15% on the total bill before tax, 20% for exceptional service – however you should in no-way feel obligated to do so.

This general rule of thumb holds true for restaurants and hotels alike in Canada. Please note that often in restaurants there will be an automatic 15% gratuity for larger groups (usually 8 or more) so be sure to read your bills closely if you’re dining with a large party.

Unlike tradition in our industry, Abigail’s pools all tips and distributes them based on hours worked. We do this out of fairness to our “back of the house” staff who work equally hard to ensure your experience is delightful.

Is Abigail a real person? How did the hotel get its name?
No Abigail is not a real person. There are a few commonly accepted theories on how the hotel got its name:

The name Abigail is believed to mean "source of joy" (Biblically)
Also in the Bible, Abigail was a hostess known as a faithful and honourable women
Lastly, words starting with "A" come really early-on in the phone book (i.e. the 'marketing theory')
